While trying to update a map I finally found how to access the update menu. Press PHONE + SET UP together for 3-5 seconds to enter the firmware menu, there is then a tab to allow you to update via DVD/CD, USB or SD Card. Place in your media and follow instructions. To exit press PHONE + SET UP again. Now - VW T-Roc R & Audi Q5.

Offroad navigation (waypoint mode) was enabled before the update, yes. I did check all applications for all sections where the map update provided updates. VW_NAR instead of VW_ECE in this case. No Google Earth scripts. No messing with the Green Menu (besides offroad navigation).

I have had a response from the vendor - Vagtechnik - who has in the past provided firmware and map software updates for T3/T4 Touaregs with the RNS850 media unit. He was missing in action for a while but has informed me that he will be up and running again from early August 2020. I will update this thread as/when I have more information.

Maps are installed in the "User" update mode with a forced update of all components. This mode will always be available to you without the need to enable it in the engineering (green) menu.
