On some older games rendered on cpu the framerate difference can be 50% because when you run at 200+ fps the per-frame overhead of windows limits the performance. While if your hardware can do only 50fps then difference between linux and windows is only 10%. Reply reply. astroxen.

Stemming from our initial Intel Core i7 1165G7 'Tiger Lake' benchmarks on the Dell XPS 13 9310 last week and then also discovering better single-threaded performance on Ubuntu 20.10, one of the pressing questions was whether this is expected performance on Linux or if it's coming up short of Microsoft Windows for this first tier-one notebook to market with Intel Tiger Lake.

When taking the geometric mean of all these dozens of benchmarks ran under both Windows 10 and Ubuntu 20.10, the Ryzen 5 4500U on the Lenovo laptop was about 4.5% faster with Ubuntu Linux. Meanwhile with the Intel Core i7 1165G7 in the Dell XPS 13 9310, running Ubuntu 20.10 had around an 8% advantage over Windows.

Note: Ultimately you may need to add more RAM. Note: Incorrect use of the rm and dd commands can cause data loss. Suggest copy/paste. In the terminal ... sudo swapoff -a # turn off swap. sudo rm -i /swapfile # remove old /swapfile. sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/swapfile bs=1M count=4096.

1. I have a laptop using Intel Core i3-7130U CPU and Intel UHD Graphics 620 GPU. Also using an SSD. On Windows 10, it flies. Animations are smooth, and programs launch instantly. On Ubuntu 20.04 and 20.10, it's sluggish. Everything takes a couple more seconds to launch. Kdenlive is super slow when previewing.

But with 20.10 there's official Pi 4 support for Ubuntu's Gnome desktop too. As you'd expect, running that with 1GB of RAM is not the most fun thing you can do (but it does boot), so this

If your hardware doesn't meet the recommended minimums, lighter flavors are an option (I test using hardware that has a c2d cpu & 2GB only of ram), however it'll still depend how you use the box, what software you want/need to use, whether or not they'll help. Smaller disks sizes also work, however it'll depend on what software you'll install, if you plan on release-upgrading in place, or

While Lubuntu might be somewhat lighter, Zorin Lite beats it easily on usability and aesthetics and the user will more likely stay with Linux. I also use zorin lite .it is undeniably faster and has a user friendly interface. Stock Ubuntu, with it's Gnome interface, will be marginally faster than Windows 10.

I used to have dualboot and Ubuntu ran so good, but I'm asking if Ubuntu eats less ram than Windows 10. Reply reply. nattydread69. •. Yes ubuntu uses less ram than windows does. And with a lighter desktop than gnome 3 it will use even less. Like MATE for example. Reply reply. Hannes1909.

In this testing, the Ryzen 5 4500U laptop continued to see the web browsers on Windows 10 largely outperform Ubuntu 20.10. But in the case of Intel Tiger Lake, Ubuntu 20.10 tended to deliver faster browser benchmarks than Windows on the same hardware -- but with a few exceptions for specific browser workloads that were run faster on the

It's more than just 1-2 seconds faster across the board. "If taking the geometric mean of all 79 benchmark results, Ubuntu 21.04 on this AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3990X workstation was 25% faster than Windows 10 for this set of workstation-minded benchmarks." Reply reply. max1c. •• Edited.

Even if we assume 15% on Linux, which is well above what I observed, it still doesn't explain the massive, massive discrepancy between the two. The scripts also are relatively straightforward: 1. Install dependencies via apt-get. 2. Download latest crosstool-NG via wget. 3. Untar, make, and install crosstool-NG.

Ubuntu 20.10 was used given its popularity and leading when it comes to Linux desktop usage. As shown in the other tests this week, Intel's Clear Linux can still deliver ~15% uplift over Ubuntu and other distributions.Originally the plan was to also include Clear Linux on this Ryzen 9 5950X OS comparison but the latest Clear Linux releases were having kernel issues with the AMDGPU driver.

1. I noticed this once I installed Ubuntu 20.10. There is 2.1GiB of memory used as "Cache". I know the CPU, GPU and hard disk's have a cache. I know of swap memory, but this is the first time I'm seeing such a large cache relating to the RAM.

But on Ubuntu 20.10 with Intel Tiger Lake, the Intel ANV Vulkan driver performance was slower than the company's separate Vulkan Windows driver. But at the same time Mesa 20.3-devel continues making a lot of headway so will be interesting to see how the Intel Tiger Lake Vulkan performance compares on Windows and Linux moving forward.

Probably some memory leak in a software you're running. Try to restart gnome-shell with alt + f2 and entering r (then press enter) will reduce your memory usage to like 1.2Gb. If so, most probably one of the shell extensions you're using has a memory leak. Reply.
