ATRAC (what they called the LSD vehicle) will get you through a lot more than a purely open diff but there's no substitute for a locker in certain situations. The only thing I think was exaggerated was the need for a front locker on both those obstacles. I have friends who are locked front and rear but they rarely ever need to use the front locker.

ATRAC is good for locking up the front or back wheels when one wheel is off the ground. It brakes the free wheel so the other wheel has traction. This would not work with the diff locked since both rear wheels are turning. That's why it may not be available when the diff is locked. Check this by putting it in 4 lo with the diff locked.

2017 4Runner TRD Off Road Icon Stage6 - Method Wheels - KO2's The crawl control and terrain select are cool and can come in handy, I got buried in sand up to my running boards on both sides and got out using just those modes and nothing else, but with that being said I dont think it would be worth it to buy a whole new car just for them.

The Toyota 4Runner TRD Off Road is what I would consider as the most bang for your buck 4Runner you can get, and probably one of the most bang for your buck all-terrain vehicles on the market today. The TRD Off Road has a lot of features, but for this article, only the four-wheel drive system will be discussed. ... The rear locker should only

The operating principle of A-TRAC in 4Runner vehicles is straightforward. When the A-TRAC system detects wheel traction loss, it applies the brakes to individual wheels without traction, redirecting torque to the wheels with better traction. This allows for improved off-road performance and enhanced control and stability on slippery surfaces.

The engineer explained to me, A-TRAC is a bit more aggressive and Crawl Control is very aggressive compared to MTS. This is because both systems rely heavily on the braking system to optimize traction. Used for a long period of time can cause the brakes and the transmission to over heat and potentially cause damage.

Sort by: rearwindowpup. •. In short, A-Trac was designed to mimic a locker, both having the goal of providing power to a wheel with traction. It does this by pulsing the brakes on the free-spinning wheel allowing the wheel getting traction chances to bite. The locker will force the power to be split between the wheels, and with one it the air

Sounds like the question has been answered, but TFL just dropped a new 4Runner video this morning that has a great demonstration of traction control vs ATRAC vs locker. The whole video is good, but to see the 4Runner on the rollers skipped to the 6:00. mark. Keep watching and they get it in some flexy stuff in the dirt.

Supposedly the new Toyotas all have ATRAC in 4low without a button. TFL tested the new Tacoma on rollers and it was able to get off with only one front tire touching the ground. I would still prefer a manual front locker for "extreme" off roading and rock crawling but I feel pretty confident with the rear locker and ATRAC up front.

It may make it worst. In addition, elocker can only be activated in 4-LO. Now, if you are stuck in a snowbank or under a pile of snow, then e-locker may you get free. And in that rare case, then e-locker is preferred over ATRAC because ATRAC/VSC can kill momentum at times.

No contest. For general off-roading (camping, mild off-roading) and all-season (all-weather) use, ATRAC is superior. With ATRAC, you also have a superior ABS system (4-channel vs. 3-channel), rear disc brakes (4th gen only), EBD, and Brake Assist. The latter points are especially important when you talk about on-road safety.

Same thing as ATRAC. (Also an optional rear locker but not available with the stability system.) On the Titan forums, owners swore up and down the ABLS system had no limitations and is miraculously better than an LSD. They just did not see the limitations. But Toyota's quality and my urban driving requirements make a 4Runner my only option.

The advantage of a locker is that those two wheels are locked in without any delay, you have power on both sides, and as long as at least one tire has grip, you're moving. A-Trac takes some time to work. It has to sense the wheel slipping and apply brake pressure to that one wheel to throw power to the other side.
