Very true. Something that wasn't very "true" about the scene, however, is the guitar McFly is using. He is, in fact, playing a Gibson ES-345, which wouldn't be introduced until 1958. The scene is set in 1955. Apparently on his way back to '55, McFly must've made a pit stop in '58 to pick up the guitar. The biggest difference is

The biggest difference between Gibson ES-345s available today and Marty's guitar is that Marty's was retrofitted with a Bigsby, as many good guitars are. McFly was emulating Chuck Berry and playing Johnny B. Goode before it was even released, thus insinuating that Berry got the idea for the song from McFly. Hey, anything's possible!

Back to the Future, 1985. Erlewine designed the Chiquita in collaboration with Billy Gibbons as a travel guitar in 1979. The marketing around it still touts it as "nearly a foot shorter than a Strat" and as easier to take on planes. Only 28″ long and 4.5 lbs., it is made from a solid piece of Honduras mahogany.

With its cult following, Back to the Future's historical inaccuracies are well-known. One of which is the use of a 1958 Gibson ES-345 in the famous scene where Marty McFly gets on stage to play Chuck Berry's Johnny B. Goode, AKA one of the most iconic guitar film moments ever. The only issue is that the scene was set in 1955, three years before Gibson launched the guitar.

The Future of the Electric Guitar. "I've learned to never say you've invented something when it comes to the electric guitar," says Chris DiPinto from DiPinto Guitars, "because it probably already exists on some strange electric from the '60s." That's the problem with the future—it has this strange habit of being a version of the past.
