As a genral rule I find that Camac harps sound a bit brighter than Lyon and Healy or Salvi. Lyon and Healy harps tend to have a mellower sound. Neither is better, just different. And this is, of course, a generalization. June 5, 2010 at 12:47 pm #159084.

That's my personal interpretation and I've heard others say otherwise. The other big difference is weight - Camac harps are a bit lighter generally, and like Salvis have wheels for easily moving them around a space. Salvi harps are definitely the heaviest, Lyon and Healy are also a little lighter but don't have wheels.

I own a Lyon Healy Prelude 40. It's string spacing and tension are described as similar to their pedal harps. It uses pedal harp gut strings and the size of the harp is the same as their Chicago pedal harp sans base which is deeper to accomodate the pedals so the vibrating length of the strings is the same. That said, I absolutely love my harp.

Camac pedal harps tend to have a bit more vertical separation between the soundboard and the action in the top octave because the design is similar to the early Erard harps. That might be helpful if you have large hands. One also sits a bit higher at a Camac than with other brands, which I find makes it easier to see the higher octave strings.

Although I own one of the very best Camac concert-grand pedal harps, I have never found a Camac lever harp that I wanted to buy. (Mine is a Dusty Strings FH36S in cherry, with Camac levers!) I can, however, vouch for the high quality of Camac harps in general. If you get a chance to try out some Camac lever harps, you might find one to your liking.

Reach out to Camac and ask for sound samples of the 2 harps. I know all harps of the same model sound slightly different so… Check out New Jersey Harp Center, Virginia Harp Center, and Atlanta Harp Center. If they have one of those harps in stock, ask them for a sound sample.
