It is much much better than the first game. 2 has a more indepth tutorial and a more linear campaign. Like the others are saying game 2 was an easier transition for me, in large part due to saurus. My advice, that I would give anyone wanting to start with these games, is to simply play the second game, without DLC.

I strongly recommend hammer and anvil and checkboard formation as a beginner. Don't let your lord take too much abuse. They are strong but not invincible. Don't let your formations blob up, many of the units won't even really fight but take damage. You can do this by spacing your front line units out a bit.
