A classic way to paddle a tandem canoe solo is from the bow seat facing backward. Most Northstar tandems are built with a bow thwart behind the bow seat, which maximizes the stiffness of the canoe and minimizes weight. Though, on our shortest tandems, the B 16 and Northwind 16, we've eliminated the bow thwart to allow solo paddling from the

The Northwind 16 would top the list of best tandem canoes ever built. The ability to solo better than almost any tandem because of the tumblehome, lower profile and asymmetrical rocker. The shouldered tumblehome allows one from a center or back-of-center (see Kneeling Thwart pics below) to easily access the water for an efficient stroke.

Reaction score. 106. Dec 31, 2023. #1. I own a North Wind 17 and a North Wind solo. I got to take both on river trips in 2023 and here's what I think about them. With the North Wind series, Northstar decided to sacrifice some speed in favor of seaworthiness. I knew this when I bought them but I expected them to be faster than they are.

If you're a little more flexible and less go go go, the Northwind 16 is capable of getting you out both solo and tandem. If you're anywhere near Bemidji I'd be happy to let you try them out to compare, the water isn't frozen yet and had a nice paddle yesterday. You actually need two canoes in my humble opinion.

I have an appointment to test several Northstar tandems in a week & I'm interested in hearing thoughts and experiences with materials (Starlite v.s. Blacklite) and hulls (Northwind 16 & 17 & B16 & B17). The primary purpose is to replace a 33 year old Sawyer Cruiser that has grown to ~70 lbs with something in the mid40s. Much of the use will be day trips on Michigan rivers but the driving use

Or maybe the Polaris rigged for solo. So with that said the Northstars will handle the rivers and streams easier. The larger the solo the more I assume that you will be in the weight range it was designed for with the dog, gear and ballast. From limited experience with dogs in canoes the larger the primary stability the better.

Solo or Solo/Tandem? | Northstar Canoes

https://www.northstarcanoes.com/concerning-canoes/solo-or-solotandem/
Solo canoes are designed to be paddled alone: the ends are narrow. Tandems are built to carry a person in each end: the ends are full. Solos don't hold two people comfortably. Tandems have plenty of capacity for two. When you paddle a tandem solo, even a small one, with little equipment, you'll get blown around in the wind, unless you're
