Slave Ambient shares several qualities with its 2008 predecessor, Wagonwheel Blues: a sense of open-freeway abandon and splendid isolation set against a glorious expanse; an unabashed admiration

SLAVE AMBIENT, released 10 years ago this month, would eventually help them get there, though. It's an album to get lost in, with rich sonic texture and kaleidoscopic soundscapes, both hallmarks of the band in this day and age. It's the sound of a band taking off, getting ready to soar into the stratosphere. Although critically acclaimed at

The band wisely begins Slave Ambient with their best-written and most traditional numbers, using textured synth washes and distorted guitars as accents rather than diversions. Granduiciel's singing on "I Was There" gets a gorgeous reverb treatment, but beyond that, the song could almost pass as a '70s-era Dylan ballad.

Throughout Slave Ambient there's also a prevalent lean on Krautrock-inspired repetitions, immediately noticeable during the first song's end jam and in the hypnotic "It's Your Destiny." The consecutive pulsing speeds up on "Your Love Is Calling My Name" where Granduciel's nasal-toned croons recall a young Tom Petty under driving

Slave Ambient is an impressionists' take on Americana, rendered in the abstract, creating a beautiful balance between the past and the future tenses of music. Adam Granduciel's stories unfold just like forefathers of American rock n roll -Dylan, Petty, et al. — where pitches are stumbled upon, highways are dreams and dreams are highways

Slave Ambient continues themes of wanderlust and searching that were all over the other records, but as Granduciel sings of friends gone, of calling loved ones home, of trying to find his place in the world changing around him, the music behind him seems to be searching too. The War on Drugs pull off an unlikely marriage of styles on Slave Ambient, performing rootsy folk rock songs that recall Springsteen, Dylan, and Petty with the languid motorized rhythms and crystalline guitar and droning synth textures of 70's krautrock. And while it's a recipe that essentially works, with the sparkly, drifting atmosphere conjured by the sonics apropos to the band's songs of

Of course, the easy familiarity that Slave Ambient exudes might be down to more than just its melting pot of well-worn influences. Anyone that has heard another of 2011's best albums, Kurt Vile's Smoke Ring For My Halo, will doubtless recognise certain similarities between the two long-players; not surprisingly, perhaps, given that the original War On Drugs line-up was based around Granduciel

Compelling all the way, Slave Ambient, W.O.D's second album, goes from an electric/acoustic instrument based first half, to a synth & effect layered second, that doesn't forego the foundations and feeling of its first. Adam Granduciel's vocals are great; Dylanesque in some phrasing, which I really dig, but also mellifluous and very tuneful.
