That's interesting you should mention that. Many Chinese actually refer to Shenzhen as a "cultural black hole - 文化黑洞". I believe this is because the history of the city is only really 40 years old, since it was largely built up after it's strategic location next to Hong Kong led to it being designated as the first Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in China in 1980.
