I've been in many debates on the subject of religion with atheists, but I've never seen a debate on religion actually result in someone changing their mind. Being that religion is something that is very faith-based, it can cause a loop of what-ifs and what-if-nots.

Even when debates did occur, they were typically between practitioners of the same religion, arguing over doctrine, while assuming the basic truths of their religious tradition.
