The JX-3P is something of a hidden treasure - there is more to it than meets the eye. It came out about the same time as the venerable JUNO series, but represents a shift away from the traditional analog synthesizer interface and towards a less hands-on format. The JX-3P was mostly aimed towards players looking for those great stable Roland sounds of the time, but with immediate Preset-based

The JX-3P is positioned somewhere between a Juno and a Jupiter. The six-voice poly has two digitally controlled oscillators with additional modulation capabilities like cross modulation and oscillator sync. The 24dB lowpass filter is based on Roland's IR3109 chip, the same one that's in the Jupiter-4, 8, 6, Junos 6 and 60 and SH-101.

The JX3P has 12 DCOs, which allow for a dual oscillator and 6‑note polyphony — pretty much standard for the period. DCOs 1 and 2 are essentially the same, both having 4‑foot, 8‑foot, and 16‑foot voices, along with ramp, pulse and square waveforms, but DCO 2 also includes Noise and Cross Modulation.

As someone who has been using Roland gear for many years (first keyboard was a Fantom S), I enjoy the Roland sound. My vintage JX3P is probably my favorite synth in my collection. So once I finally got a System 8, I wanted to compare the jx3p plug-out to the actual analog synth. In some parts it is dead on, in other situations there's a

The JX-8P is a decent analog polysynth. It has 6 voices of polyphony, great MIDI implementation and patch storage as well as an external memory cartridge slot. Though it is far more advanced than its predecessor, the JX-3P, the JX-8P has its drawbacks. Hands-on programming is sacrificed and reduced to assigning the parameter you want to tweak
