The Pro-Ject Debut PRO is a belt driven, unsuspended turntable; the type standard for affordable vinyl replay. From there though, things take a trip towards the more curious end of proceedings. Cast your mind back to the closing years of the 20 th century and the newly arrived Debut was a compact, simple and ultra affordable turntable.

The Pro-Ject Debut PRO is the natural competitor to the Rega Planar 3; one of the most popular and best-selling audiophile turntables of the past 30 years and having spent considerable time with both — it's starting to look like a very different race. Both turntables are the best options at $1,000 and you really can't go wrong purchasing

The Pro-Ject turntable is equally simple, with belt drive, manual controls and high-quality components. It is not as expensive as a Pro-Ject The Classic, but better built than a regular Debut Carbon turntable from the same manufacturer. The turntable is also relatively compact, and 41.5 x 32 cm means it can fit where The Classic doesn't.

The Debut PRO's precisely balanced, 3lb, 300mm diameter, ¾"-thick platter is damped by a ½"-wide strip of thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) sunk into the underside near the outer rim, damping resonance. Pro-Ject says this reduces wow and flutter. That platter is attached to a stainless-steel shaft that nestles into a bronze bushing and rides on a

The Rega Planar 3/Elys 2 now costs £799/£1395/AU$1449. Price rises seem part and parcel of most things now, but up against the Pro-Ject, it does weaken the Rega's long-established position of being arguably the best value record player on the market. Pro-Ject has been aggressive with the Debut Pro's pricing.

In 2020, Pro-Ject released the latest version — the Debut Carbon EVO. The first time we played around with the EVO, we could tell it was going to be an outstanding value. We also love the way Pro-Ject gives up an upgrade path on the Debut line to make it sound even better over time. For the 30th anniversary of the original Pro-Ject turntable
