May 6, 2011. #2. Practice what you preach is the correct saying. I have never heard of the other way. Practice before you preach changes the meaning to my way of thinking. I see a preacher rehearsing a sermon!! Practice what you preach means don't tell me how to live if you cannot live that way yourself. The other way (before) is ambiguous even

It was my way of giving everyone the permission we rarely give to ourselves - to "live a little".
