That said, I don't think that modern graphics are necessarily a detriment to being scary. I just don't think there are many AAA horror games that get made these days. Most of the innovation in that genre today is probably coming from the indie sphere, where you're not going to have Capcom-level art direction. 6. Award.

But early 3D games that went for serious tones all came across as completely ridiculous. All these goofy-looking, only roughly human-looking characters being serious, often with serious voicework. But with no facial expressions (or very limited ones), and often with corny-as-fuck exaggerated motions, like head-bobbing or hand-waving, just so

Horrorshow isn't alone, either. An increasing number of developers are using the nineties 3D look to make horror games. Hackett's community began experimenting with it in jam projects like Broken Paradox, which kicked off its run of tiny horror titles."Everything is a little less well-defined, so it's hard to tell exactly what you're looking at," explains Hackett.

Also due to the primitive animation features, you can never predict what a character is going to do. Think of a modern video game -- it's easy to tell when a guard is alert, sad, happy, surprised, etc. But with older games guards have the same expression all the time which comes across as creepy. This might be the reason why high quality

Is there something inherently more scary about outdated / early 3D

New games can be pretty scary, but I think there is something fundamentally creepy about PS1 and PS2-era 3D graphics. My theory is that outdated graphics look very old and forgotten... Outdated graphics also make games feel more lonely if that makes any sense, because the graphics clearly indicate that the game is old and no longer mainstream

Yes, but Ion Maiden is not doing "early 3D" for the player models and whatnot - it's aping Doom and Duke Nukem, not Quake 1 and other "early 3D" games. Those player models and weapon models are all billboards. Imho, graphics were a huge step backwards when they moved away from billboards for 3D games. Like how Diddy Kong Racing was uglier than Mario Kart 64, Quake was uglier than Doom.

Undoubtedly. While there may have been 'a lot' of games that set a sombre tone of greys and browns (and not much else), there were also a lot that didn't. Here are some screenshots from The Best PS1 Games, Ever!:-The colors used are chosen to match the tone of the game. Take Tomb Raider for example (IMO the best 3D game ever!).
