As far as 1-6 vs 1-8, the 1-8x does everything the 1-6x does. You can set them both to 6x and they look the same as far as I can tell. You don't have to use the extra magnification 24-7. Its nice to have it if you do want it, though. Like if you're shooting those tiny little 22 caliber .223 rounds.

Check out the Swampfox Tomahawk 1-8 as an alternative to the Strike Eagle. The 8x Tomahawk has a lot larger ocular lens than the PA or Vortex which translates into a lot wider FOV for 1x use like a red dot. Got the Swampfox recently and definitely prefer it to the Strike Eagle.

I love vortex optics. I own the razor 1-10x and viper pst Gen 2 1-6x and 5-25x. That being said I think there are many better options for an entry LPVO than the strike eagle and I promise you no SOF guy is using a strike eagle in Afghanistan lol. I know the article you read and it's bullshit.

About two days after that class I ordered a vortex razor gen 3 1-10 ffp in MRAD. Zeroing and shooting that is so much more enjoyable. TLDR I wouldn't spend the money on that scope.
