The first I heard of Mussorgsky was Night on Bald Mountain in Fantasia, then later I too was introduced to Pictures at an Exhibition through ELP. I'm a fan of the band and '70s prog in general. I also love Maurice Ravel's orchestral arrangement of P.A.A.E., but I have yet to listen to the original piano version. I'll get to that soon.

Composed in 1867, when Mussorgsky was still in his twenties, A Night on Bald Mountain is early Mussorgsky and vintage subject matter: a tone poem depicting a witches' Sabbath occurring on St. John's Eve, the very night (June 23) when he completed the work to his evident satisfaction. Unfortunately, his friend and mentor, the composer and piano virtuoso Mily Balakirev, held a lesser opinion

This is an important collection of real rarities by Mussorgsky. Many of them are manhandled by Rimsky-Korsakov in game re-orchestrations, but there is more than enough of the original to engage the attention. The early Scherzo in B flat must rank as one of Mussorgsky's least individual pieces, with its Schubertian good humour. In slow passages Abbado tends to inflate matters, but on balance

The original "St Johns Eve on Bald Mountain" may have had rough edges, but it had a lot more fire than Rimsky-Korsakov left after he polished away most of the originality. I feel similarly about Ravel and Pictures; fortunately in the case of Pictures there are a ton of other orchestrations available.
