Modal Electronics Cobalt 8 - Sound On Sound

The Cobalt 8 is compact, measuring just 555 x 300 x 100 mm, but reassuringly weighty at 5.6kg. Last but not least, the Cobalt 8 has a three‑slot effects engine with a choice of 12 effects covering modulation, delay and reverb. They get three dedicated knobs to control the six available parameters.

The Big Review: Modal Electronics Cobalt8 - MusicTech

https://musictech.com/reviews/hardware-instruments/the-big-review-modal-electronics-cobalt8/
Modal describes the Cobalt8 as an extended virtual-analogue synthesiser, and that extension begins at the front end. The unit offers two oscillator groups per voice, with each oscillator group employing up to four oscillators, which results in up to eight oscillators per voice. The polyphonic voice count is topped at eight but, due to the mass

Review: Modal Electronics Cobalt 8 — AudioTechnology

https://www.audiotechnology.com/reviews/modal-electronics-cobalt-8
The Cobalt 8 itches a few scratches. It's a synth lover's synth, with enough depth and modulation possibilities to maintain their attention. And it's a musicians synth as well, with good playability and build quality. The '8', of course, refers to polyphony. It's a big number for a synth that sells for around A$1300.

Modal Electronics COBALT8 - Attack Magazine

Modal's latest is a virtual analogue poly that aspires to reinvent the aesthetic of traditional analogue sound. A sibling to Modal's acclaimed ARGON8 Wavetable synth, the COBALT8 is an eight-voice polyphonic virtual analogue synth with a few tricks up its sleeve. With the exception of its swanky metallic (presumably cobalt) blue paint job

Yeah Modal stuff is pretty quiet in general, I think they're building stuff to the "quieter" of the two main line level standards. There's also a boost/saturation option in the global settings for extra gain. I've had my Cobalt 8M for a couple of weeks now, it's good fun. The colour is really nice.

Got the argon8x, the firmware definitely cleared up all the major problens that have been listed in reviews. It's my only synth so no comparison, but I haven't really found any complaints yet. And at thomannmusic in Europe the full version can be had for under $600usd, which in that price category brings a lot of features.

Unlocking the full potential of analogue waveforms, digitally. Modal's virtual analogue powerhouse is another winner from the ultra-consistent synth brand. Modal Electronics delivered one of our favourite synth releases of 2020 in the form of the excellent Argon8, a wavetable-based instrument that reminded us of all the benefits of digital synthesis.
