Pre-Classic is the name given to the prototype versions of Minecraft (what is now Java Edition) developed before Classic. It was the very first development phase of the game, lasting for less than a week; very early development of Minecraft started around May 10[1] or May 11[2] and ended on May 16, 2009. The phase was originally named "Cave Game" until the game was changed to "Minecraft: Order

I remember last year, when they first had the new launcher that allowed you (without a mod) to access old versions of Minecraft like Alpha and even pre-Alpha versions like Infdev, Classic, and Rubydung. At no point, was there any sound missing in the alpha version (in fact, I think even some of the VERY old Rubydung ones had sound).

Playing Beta 1.7.3 is the most fun I've had with the game! Also I think The Adventure Update and its consequences have been a disaster for the Minecraft playerbase, introducing features that have led to a series of unintended outcomes that have fundamentally taken the games soul.

I was wondering if there will ever be a way to backtrack to the early betas, pre-alpha, infdev, indev, alpha, and so on and so forth. Getting an old .jar version is considered illegal by Notch for what reason I don't know but I really want to go back to the days of Beta 1.2 where I first started.

Just to clarify, when I'm talking about the Minecraft Alpha experience in this essay, I am specifically referring to the pre "Halloween Update" era (aka Alpha 1.2). This is because 1.2 is often not held in the same level of admiration as 1.1 and below, since it has a very similar feel to early Beta just from the addition of biomes alone.

Classic was the second phase in the development cycle of Minecraft (Java Edition), following pre-Classic and preceding Indev, and was the first Minecraft development stage to have publicly released versions. This phase was named "alpha" by Notch during its development[1] (hence the "a" in the version number) until June 28, 2010, when a blog post retroactively labeled it as "Minecraft Classic

I think the reason many people prefer Pre-Beta 1.8 versions of Minecraft is because of the play-style differences. Whereas Modern Minecraft functions more like a finished RPG with innovative sandbox elements and an optional storyline for the player to follow, older Minecraft plays more akin to an innovative sandbox game with unfinished RPG elements and no formal ending for the player to get too.

In old versions, particularly Alpha, there's a lot less of this pressure, which makes it easier to just build what you want to and enjoy the game. I started playing on Pocket Edition around when villages were added, (v0.9.0, according to the wiki.) and I didn't switch to Java until 1.12, so it's definitely not nostalgia for me.
