The most noticable difference is the the arrows on the leader tape, which will vary with color. The ultra smooth tape has teal arrows, the smoky tape has blue arrows, this static tape has green arrows, and the 5 other static tapes have black arrows. Here are the IDs printed on the cassettes. Ultra smooth tape: D1269072.

Only TDK still coats audio tape anymore, The 'D' normal cassette. The rest are either only assemblers or outsource the who product. Most of the tape comes from either Korea (SKM) or China. it is not anything close to the quality that was made in the 80s or 90s. Sony, TDK, and Fuji still assemble VHS cassettes, but don't make the tape anymore.

TDK MA-XG metal frame tape. TDK SA-XG metal frame tape. Maxell Vertex. Sony Metal Master. Denon MG-X. Triad/ That's Suono (some say the best tape ever made) There may be some chrome variants off the metal tapes. I think there may be a Sony Chrome Master as well. All of the above are tapes that command a huge price on Ebay, some up to $100 per tape.

I'd say cassettes started officially being withdrawn from the market in the US around 2003-2004. Nowadays, one can find the occasional blank tape in discount stores like Kmart or pharmacies, but it's all basic stuff (Sony HF, Maxell UR, and that's about it). The last chrome tapes seem to have vanished from store shelves around 2007/8.

A brief look at History. The cassette was developed by the Dutch company Royal Philips in Hasselt, Belgium, by Lou Ottens and his team. It was introduced in September 1963. In the '70s and '80s when the cassette came to prominence and became the most important recording format of its time, it was a 50/50 between sound and functionality.

The best new cassette today in 2022-2023 is junkier though and probably is maybe as good as a cassette from 1969 or 1970, so yes, that bad, so your only reasonable alternative is to collect a stash of USED 1979-1999 TDK & 1980-1999 Maxell and 1985-1995 Sony, 1985-1995 Fuji, 1985-1995 BASF normals and a few Denon typeII from late '80s.
