On a technical level, Franz Liszt's Concert Study No. 3 in D-flat Major, "Un Sospiro" is a skillfully delivered magic trick. Its score sprawls onto three musical staves and it sounds as if it requires, at minimum, three large and dexterous hands. But all of these voluptuous tones are played using an amazing slight of hand.

The poignant, ever-popular Un Sospiro is the third of three concert etudes Liszt composed between 1845 and 1849. All three of them, as their collective title indicates, were written to be presentable in concert performance, but they were also designed as specific technique-building exercises. Un Sospiro, the most famous of the three numbers, is

For today's purposes, let's take a look at one of his virtuosic piano works: Un Sospiro "A Sigh.". Un Sospiro was composed in 1848 as part of "Trois etudes de concert.". Being a virtuoso himself, it makes sense that Liszt would incorporate challenging techniques in order for the pianist to essentially show off for his/her audience.

During Liszt's "Un Sospiro" performed before a live audience, the typical sounds you might hear from the audience beyond the ending applause typically include a cough, maybe a sneeze, the possibility of a door closing, and even, though less likely, the sound of an airplane if the venue is near an airport.
