I agree with the others and would like to add one more thing. If you are using acrylic paints, especially cheap ones (Nothing wrong with that btw, I've just noticed that cheaper paints have more of this issue) adding a tiny bit of titanium white to the paint before you use it helps your paint to be a bit more opaque and can help the colors look less muddled.
