Tartt was born in Greenwood, Mississippi in 1963, and credits the southern love of storytelling with sparking her interest in creating narratives. She grew up surrounded by elderly family members, including a number of aunts, reminiscent of those in The Little Friend, who told her stories, spoke in a secret language and talked to cats.

Six Writing Tips From Donna Tartt: 1. "To really be centered and to really work well and to think about the kinds of things that I need to think about, I need to spend large amounts of time alone.". 2. "Everything takes me longer than I expect. It's the sad truth about life.".

Donna Tartt's cozy/murderous winter classic The Secret History, which turned 30 this year, is Today's December Read With Jenna Pick—and the famously publicity-agnostic Tartt answered a few questions about the book and her experiences over the last 30 years for the website.. The most interesting bit of the interview (to me) was Tartt's list of books that, she writes, "were important

Donna Tartt, the writing life. Three books in a 30-year career. Her love for literature and fashion. An intimate conversation with the famous and elusive author of The Goldfinch. I vividly remember it: Milan, Piazza Castello 27, 2nd floor, 4th room on the right. In brief: my office at Vogue Italia, in 1992.

Donna Tartt has all the makings of a literary enigma: a shyness towards publicity, gushing praise and sniffling naysayers, and a killer look consisting of black trousers, some kind of suit jacket or blazer, and a crisp shirt, often with a chic scarf. (Seriously, check her out.) Tartt is quoted in Telegraph story saying: "If I'm not working, I'm not happy. That's it. That's the

Starting off the day with this practice can help orient your brain for a day of inspiration and productivity. Harriett, constantly confronted with the aftermath of a tragedy she was too small to remember, decides one summer that she will solve the whodunit. Unfortunately, this central whodunit is where Tartt's plotting falls apart at the very end. Harriett sets in motion an unforeseen set of events in pursuit of the culprit.

What are your thoughts on Donna Tartt's writing? I have already read The Secret History about 3 times, and The Goldfinch once (not more because it is really long, but I love it as well as TSH). She really inspired me in tons of ways and my experience reading TSH was so good it felt unbelievable, but for that exact reason I might be a bit biased

I think I'm one of those rare people who love Donna Tartt but absolutely hated If We Were Villains. In my opinion, it was just a YA weakened and severely watered down version of The Secret History with shitty writing. For me, 'Special Topics in Calamity Physics by Marisha Pesshl' was a better substitute. 2.
