In 2000, Howard Goodall wrote "Big Bangs" to accompany a TV series that covered "the story of five discoveries that changed musical history". Episode 2 covered Equal Temperance. Equal temperament is a system of tuning a keyboard instrument so that an octave (e.g. C to C) is split into even intervals. This means there are equal frequency ratios between the notes.
