What is happening is that the sensor goes to deep sleep after a certain period of inactivity and does not ping/poll status until it detects some activity. And the controller, smartthings in your case, thinks that the sensor is no longer online. I get this issue sometimes with my orvibo motion sensors as well.

Or just get a zigbee sensor, open it up and see if you can fit the pcb and battery in some recess you make, with a thin (plastic or similar) that covers the holes as you don't want any obstructions

One option to consider is a regular Zigbee sensor used with one or more neodymium magnets instead of the puny magnet that comes with the sensor. I did this on a gate that moves a bit in the wind, and the stack of neodymium magnets have a 7-inch effective range with the Zigbee sensor. Thank you so much for your post.
