Equations. The simplest equation for a parabola is y = x2. Turned on its side it becomes y2 = x. (or y = √x for just the top half) A little more generally: y 2 = 4ax. where a is the distance from the origin to the focus (and also from the origin to directrix) Example: Find the focus for the equation y 2 =5x.

Equation of a parabola - derivation. Given a parabola with focal length f, we can derive the equation of the parabola. (see figure on right). We assume the origin (0,0) of the coordinate system is at the parabola's vertex. For any point ( x, y) on the parabola, the two blue lines labelled d have the same length, because this is the definition

Instead of building words, this is building equations. Say the focus is here: (x o,y o). The point on the line is (x,y). The location on the directrix will be at (x,α). Let's keep things general

Figure %: In the parabola above, the distance d from the focus to a point on the parabola is the same as the distance d from that point to the directrix. If a parabola has a vertical axis, the standard form of the equation of the parabola is this: (x - h) 2 = 4p(y - k), where p≠ 0. The vertex of this parabola is at (h, k). The focus is at (h

find vertex, half way between focus and directrix:---h = (5 - (-5))/2 + -5 h = (5 + 5)/2 + -5 h = 5 + -5 h = 0 vertex = (h,k) = (0,0)---directrix is to the left of the focus so parabola opens to the right and p is positive distance between focus and vertex: p = 5---conic form of horizontal parabola: 4p(x - h) = (y - k)^2 4(5)x = y^2

Recall that the definition of locus is the set points that meet some given conditions. In this definition of a parabola, it is the shape created by the points that are the same distance from a given point (call the focus) and a given line (called the directrix)*. Put another way, of all the infinite number of points on the plane, we select only those that are the same distance from the point

Solution: Since the focus (2,0) lies on the x -axis, the x -axis itself is the axis of the parabola. Hence the equation of the parabola is of the form y2 = 4ax or y2 = −4ax. Since the directrix is x = −2 and the focus is (2,0), the parabola is to be of the form y2 = 4ax with a = 2. Hence the required equation is y2 = 4(2)x = 8x .
