Without a higher lift taller jack stands won't help. I use 3/4" and 1⅛" ply wood cut into 1 foot squares. I used scrap wood I found at work, so I have an entire milk crate full. They also keep the jack/stands from damaging your drive way. Bigger jackstands are the best way to go.

Hi-lifts never, ever lower easily. It is mostly due to the fact that we leave them out in the elements and they get dirt in the mechanism. So, here is a down-and-dirty (no pun intended) fix to the problem on the side of the road or trail. Keep a small can of WD-40 in your truck and use it to lube the mechanism.
