In a brief cutaway serving as the first suggestion that Hard Eight, 1 Paul Thomas Anderson's debut feature, may have greater stylistic ambitions than to simply join the wave of chatty, violent American indies that littered the mid-1990s, we see John waiting in line for a movie when his pocket abruptly bursts into flames. The DVD of Hard Eight is compared to the Blu-ray HERE. On the audio commentary, Paul Thomas Anderson explains, that all you need, to get a film started, is coffee and cigarettes. What few know is, that this perhaps is one of the most important statements from a director in the last 35 years, as Godard's rule ("All you need is a girl and a gun

Hard Eight - 1996 Paul Thomas Anderson. The first image is brilliant—the perfect framing of Philip Baker Hall's shadow on the far right with Jack's Coffee Shop—stunning—the ending is strong as well but we really never hit this high again. a jaw-dropper first image using architecture here.

Unpopular opinion here: Hard Eight is my #1 favorite P.T. Anderson film - and I've seen them all. Excellent movie, especially given that it was his first. Another underrated movie involving gambling is Rounders (1998) - starring Ed Norton, Matt Damon, and Gretchen Mol.

Paul Thomas Anderson's debut film Hard Eight (working title Sydney, preferred by Anderson, thwarted by his backers) arose from the performance of a veteran actor who caught his eye in Martin Brest's Midnight Run—Philip Baker Hall. For a long time I thought Boogie Nights was Anderson's first. He seemed to have sprung out of nowhere, but the cast of Hard Eight alone should be enough to signal it as an important entry: Early appearances from John C Reilly, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Samuel L Jackson (two years after Pulp Fiction made him a star), and esteemed character actor Phillip Baker Hall, given

The start of one of the greatest track-records of any filmmaker. The absolute visionary and master who is Paul Thomas Anderson. That's because it sort of is. Hard Eight isn't a bad movie or anything, but it doesn't stack up to the rest of PTA's filmography. It feels comparatively undistinguished compared to Boogie Nights or There Will Be Blood.
