Dad has stories of his parents when growing up in a village in central England in the 1920's. Their first house was built literally 400 years ago. The core was made from recycled timbers from an old ship (probably made 100 years earlier) with mud ("wattle" ) walls and a thatched roof. No indoor plumbing. At the time this wasn't too unusual.
