It will likely feel a bit more modern than the Explorer, but it does have the shorter 24.75" Gibson scale. The main difference is in the pickups. The Snakebyte has the Het Set. I have no experience with these pickups but I believe they are a cross between active and passive sound whilst being active.

It's pretty clear that, apart from the obvious control layout differences, the bodies of the ESP MX and Gibson Explorer models are different as well. I think the ESP resembles the 1976 Explorer the most, which has pointier edges than the 1958 Korina Style Explorers. But the ESP has even pointier edges, from pictures I also get the feeling that

Posted June 14, 2007. The EC's cutaway is different, plays smooth, ect. ESP's cant make the explorer shape, Gibson got a lawsuit. They make the EX but its different. Personally, I'd prefer an LTD over any Epiphone, and any ESP over a Gibson. I'm sick of the Gibson fanboyism.

The Gibson 80's Explorer has been an axe that customers have wanted for a long time. The company seems to experiment with the Epiphone side, and we have definitely seen this model there as the "84 EX" model featuring EMG pickups. The Epiphone lineups are always interesting, with new ideas like the Prophecy Series.

There are 4 options. Find an ESP MX 220 (Earlier ESP Explorer, closer to a Gibson, very unlikely to get). ESP MX 250 (Sharper points and slightly different headstock. You can find these new for a couple thousand, as they're still made), find a Gibson 1984 Explorer, which is what I did. Difficult to find one in nice condition, but I love mine.

I think the snakebyte is horrid looking and none of those guitars are really alike. The Gibson versus the Esp are two different guitars because of pickups and such. Good luck. If you go Esp you should probably buy an ltd if your starting because its more cost effective, and a less investment if you don't continue. H.

The Explorer is my favorite Gibson guitar design. I find it lighter and more comfortable than Les Pauls, more balanced than SGs, easier to play sitting down than Flying Vs, and sits in a nice sweet spot tonally in the Gibson range, making them supremely more versatile (with the right set of pickups) than the body shape would lead you to believe.

4,536. Jan 13, 2017. #1. These type of Explorers seem to be highly liked. Why does Gibson not offer a '84 USA Reissue? Makes no sense IMO. They offer a Epiphone '84 but not a Gibson. I know Gibson did the GTOW #47 '84 Reissue years ago. Supposedly based on James Hetfields Explorer and it sold out quickly.

QUESTION. hey guys I'm considering an ESP USA Eclipse. I have owned a Gibson LP traditional for 10 years now and while I like it a lot, I could use some specific features to my taste like stainless frets and ebony fingerboard. My option A is to get a used Gibson Custom and have it refretted. The other option is to get an ESP Eclipse USA.
