The Genoese were famous not only because they were skilled professionals, but also because they were widely available in relatively large numbers (if you had the cash). The high numbers of professional crossbowmen seem to have been a result of the city of Genoa's naval capacity. Galleys, under Geneose law, were legally required to have certain

Genoese Crossbowmen were supposed to have been among the best troops in Christendom, and the sources seem to have taken pains to explain how they were routed so quickly at the battle of Crecy. First of all, there's debate about the identity of the French missile troops present at the battle. While they are typically described as "Genoese" by our primary sources, payroll records tell us that the number of professional mercenary crossbowmen from Genoa would most likely be less than the figure of six thousand that is most commonly cited.

Certainly one of the Battle of Crécy's defining features is the role of the Genoese crossbowmen in the fight. Understanding the utilization of this mercenary force is a central component to understanding the engagement itself, beginning with their initial appearance as the vanguard of the French army, then to their quick defeat by English longbows, that forced an abrupt retreat into allied

The Genoese crossbowmen were mercenaries from Genoa that assisted in defending it and other Italian and European cities. They carried daggers, crossbows, a chain mail shirt, and large shields called pavises. After firing, the crossbowmen would hide behind their pavises while reloading. This protected them from other ranged attacks.

Genoese crossbowmen fire about 20% faster than militia pavise. They kill better as a result If you check out my test data in this thread you will see a comparison of those two types of crossbowmen against the same type of longbowmen. I found that against basic longbowmen pavise militia lose 7/10 times but the Genoese win 7/10 times.

They really good at doing that. Cbows deal very little dmg against their pierce armour. Cbows already counter light cav pretty well so genoese dont seem as good there. In this case your skirms counter all their units. Genoese do suffer from the same problem all castle units have though: risky to tech into because massing them is slow.

I think they can make a good pair with Italian FU Hussars. Hussars counter Skirms, can tank a bit arbalests to give the edge to Genoese crossbowmen and can counter siege, possibly mixed with cheap BBC. Genoese crossbowmen counter cavalry, infantry (especially with their decent hit point and melee armor), HC.
