I thought about this after reading Murdoc's interview and him choosing Oasis over Blur. Yes. Damon was 2D's vocal coach and the Real Gorillaz (Damon, Jamie and friends) were a sort of a "tribute band" around to steal the cartoon Gorillaz's thunder during Phase 3. I still think of them as the tribute band, not the actual band.
