With a 22 hour transit, you may want to consider though applying for a temporary entry/stay permit, which would allow you to enter China during your transit.

I stayed in a standard tourist hotel, walked around the touristy parts of the city, stuffed my face with xiao long bao, etc. It was great. I would adamantly NOT try to do this and not be a predictable international tourist, though. I went in 2017, so maybe the process is different now, but the immigration/customs of it all went off without a hitch.
