I'm about to do my first pickup upgrade over my stock 08 standard pickups and I keep seeing high praise for the '69s. I don't want high output pickups or noiseless stuff, just very basic, low output pickups that will squeal with my distortion pedals when I need them too. Best pickups are $100 Yosemite imo. But that's splitting hairs. I had to work a bit to make the 69's shine - I have a mid boost and an Ilitch backplate loaded on the guitar that has the 69's. The poster above nailed it with the bridge pickup though. If you want a low gain guitar in positions 1-5 it's prefect and gives an immaculate position 2.

There is no early 50s sound. There is no 50s sound. It was all over the map, tonally. The OV and Nocaster pickups are just lines in the sand where Fender said this is what ideal tones should be. It depends on what kind of change you're making, e.g. from a low-output pickup to a high-output one, but regardless, it'll still be enough to be noticeable almost 100% of the time. EDIT: Also, before you go changing pick-ups, try putting some foam in your pickup cavity, underneath the pickup- it reduces microphonic feedback really well.
