The service began modestly, in 1995, from the tiny settlement of Mount Surprise to the end of the line at Forsayth. It soon became clear that there would be popular support for a service starting in Cairns and running the full length of the line. Cairns was also a more practical base in terms of workshop facilities. The Savannahlander today

A gorgeous half-day trip from Mt Surprise to Einasleigh, then return by minibus. Our driver/guide was full of knowledge, and ambling through the savannah made a nice change from driving through it at 110km/h. Copperfield George at Einasleigh was magnificent. The billy tea and bikkies by a lagoon capped it off.

The Savannahlander train - a classic 1960s "silver bullet" rail motor - travels the original 90-year-old rail line that serviced the pioneering mining towns of Forsayth, Einasleigh, and Mount Surprise. Traveling at a sedate 50 kms/hour you can immerse your self in the changing landscape. The Savannah guides are both informative and enertaining.
