The Mage is the vocation in Dragon's Dogma 2 that fuses a mixture of elemental magick and supportive magick to create a class that offers basic self-defense, with incredible party-wide buffs and support. No real reason other than it'll keep them away from the big foes. For skills, spells that I'd consider essential for a pure support mage are Anodyne, Halidom, Spellscreen, Grapnel and Holy Affinity. The last slot can either be used for another elemental affinity (Fire and Ice are the most useful), or a debilitating spell such as Blearing or

Best build is 1-10 mage and 11-200 sorcerer for maximum base magick of 866. Avoid playing as a mage and pick sorcerer after level 10. Mages are for support, not combat. Recommended augments for a sorcerer are Attunement, Acuity, Emphasis, Perpetuation, Bastion, Stability, Articulacy, Gravitas, etc.

Mages do not need Magick attack. Just slap on as much defence and HP as possible, if they're only casting non damaging magic, keeping them alive is much better option. Give them the Legions Might staff so if they go down, they don't stay down. Ensure your pawn is big. Tall, muscular, capable of carrying 100kg of goods.

Dragon's Dogma is a game with hard RPG mechanics, that are also far more luck and passive-progression-based than most casual players will know about. The game's best gear can be unlocked via the Bitter Black Isles and can be extremely difficult to find a certain piece of gear that you want. In addition, the actual stat growth of a character is not allocated but is based on the currently

Having good def and mag def is then more easily attainable, because you aren't offsetting high MAG power against DEF and STM while leveling. A Mage stands there and takes it while casting those support spells; the minimum base DEF and MDEF for good survivability is 300. PSN/GT: Karathrax. Boards. Dragon's Dogma.

As for skills - you have 6 slots, here's my reasoning. 2 slots for anodyne/halidom. It's a support mage for a reason. Then 1 slot for an elemental buff. I don't want more than 1, the game isn't really finicky about elemental efficiencies so really just having 1 is fine. I'd pick either fire/holy - ditch dark.

Split builds work fine. Pure builds have weaknesses that balanced builds don't, namely one sided defenses. There's definitely an argument to be made for pure builds, don't get me wrong. Perpetuation (Mage Level 4) - Causes your enchantments to last longer. This is a no-brainer, the longer they last, the less often your mage pawn will need to cast them. Articulacy (Sorceror Level 9) - Reduces spellcasting times. This is basically your most important augment and you should get this when you can.
