It could be that oysters were considered really fancy food in 60s, and of course he can afford them so he eats them. I could be wrong but that's my guess. I just googled oysters. I guess at one point they were poor man's food, like lobster used to be. They became more affordable in the 1800s. So maybe he just eats them because he likes them.
