Stop trying to get around the tip issue at restaurants (hint: you can't) and start trying to figure out how to enjoy a trip that is affordable to you. If you don't want to tip because you're philosophically opposed to it, stick to pizza, bodega buffet and salad bars, food halls (I still tip a bit), sandwich shops like Pret a Manger, etc.

I've been to a few places where on the receipt when it shows the suggested tip, it starts at 18%, then 20%, then even 22-25%. I always tip at least 18% unless the service was really bad. NYC is not different than anywhere else in the country in this respect. Historically, the standard was 15%, now 20% is not uncommon.
