Hoya R72 Infrared Filter Review - Ticket to Surreal Photography!?

The Hoya R72 is what I call a "daylight filter", probably useless at night. Technically, it still works at night, but it will require an insane amount of artificial IR light. Still, this is one very special filter that allows you to have a peek into the invisible world. Post-processing is the only downside of it.

The HOYA R72 infrared filter. This filter is a traditional screw-in filter that is attached to the front of your lens and blocks out light with a wavelength under 720nm, (hence the name R72) and enables the camera to record only the infrared light. Like most screw-in filters, they come in a variety of different sizes and you need a specific

Yes.. you can have a DSLR modified: 1) Replace the IR cut filter on sensor with a clear optical glass - PRO: allows dual use camera, CON; requires the filter in front of lens, for DSLRs you will need to prefocus 2) Replace the IR cut filter on sensor with a IR filter - PRO: Allows the use and focus of a DSLR as normal (no filter in front of lens). Con: Camera will be IR only. Yes.. you can

Before we get started, let's cover the difference between shooting infrared with an unmodified camera and a converted camera. Black and white photography with HOYA's R72 infrared filter

https://hoyafilter.com/reviews/black_and_white_photography_with_hoya_s_r72_infrared_filter/
The HOYA R72 filter is an infrared filter that allows to pass light only from 720nm in the light spectrum, giving a deep magenta image with reddish color tones. You can simply thread it in front of your lens to block all the visible light, creating an infrared image. Most people turn the camera settings to black and white for a dramatic and

The Filter. The Hoya R72 IR filter is probably the cheapest/easiest way to experiment with IR photography. It is a screw on filter designed to absorb most of the visible light, transmitting only the infrared light at 720nm. The small complication with using this filter is that most modern camera sensors have some degree of infrared blocking

Hoya | R72 Infrared

https://hoyafilter.com/product/r72_infrared/
How the R72 INFRARED filter works. The R72 INFRARED filter does not let any wavelengths before 740nm pass through, allowing only light in the high red area and infrared spectrum to enter the lens. From 760nm to 860nm, the light transmission rate is 95%. As infrared light is exclusively in the red color spectrum, all areas in images also appear

DIGITAL INFRARED PHOTOGRAPHY: WHAT TO SHOOT FOR - Hoya Filters

https://hoyafilterusa.com/blogs/news/digital-infrared-photography-what-to-shoot-for
You can shoot IR photography in two basic ways: (1) with a standard camera and an IR filter, or (2) a converted camera and an IR filter. What is the difference? Every standard camera comes with an internal IR-blocker (i.e., "IR cut-off filter") to make sure the pictures we take look like what we see. Since we only see visible light, the

Need help choosing a correct IR filter (Neewer or Hoya)

https://www.reddit.com/r/infraredphotography/comments/ih6pjg/need_help_choosing_a_correct_ir_filter_neewer_or/
No experience with the Neewer but that Hoya R72 has always been the gold standard for IR filters, not so much because it is better than any other 720nm filter but simply because they have always made it for decades so is kind of the standard "you can't go wrong" choice. They made this before Neewer was even a company probably.

How many stops should I compensate for with SFX200 and Hoya R72 Filter?

https://photo.stackexchange.com/questions/98794/how-many-stops-should-i-compensate-for-with-sfx200-and-hoya-r72-filter
The Hoya R72 blocks all wavelengths up to 720nm. So, first and foremost, you need to be aware that you are photographing a range that you can't see and your camera can't meter - and it's a very slim range at that. Ilford's Tech Info recommends increasing the exposure by 4 stops over what your meter would say when the filter is off.

Modern sensors - such as my D800E - have about 14-15 stops of filtering of IR light on the sensor. This is a tested result comparing exposure times on a converted IR camera with a filter to an unconverted camera. <br>. An IR filter such as the R72 blocks visible spectrum below 720nm - all the visible spectrum.

The Hoya R72 Infrared filter is specifically designed for infrared photography with digital cameras and infrared film. (Question/advice) Can I use a Hoya r72 to take photos of the sun

https://www.reddit.com/r/infraredphotography/comments/1cs6a6r/questionadvice_can_i_use_a_hoya_r72_to_take/
Thanks! An R72 only blocks visible light up to 720nm. You need a solar filter. The sun will fry the sensor. You need an ND Filter of at least 15 stop. You can put your Hoya filter over the ND filter thread though! You mean just using it on a digital camera for "normal" photography or using your camera as a telescope and pointing it directly
