The Deltic Preservation Society (DPS) formed in 1977 and at an early stage they ear-marked Deltic 16 as their preferred loco to save for preservation. Their reasoning was that this Deltic had gone through a "heavy general repair". This was an extensive bodywork restoration carried out in 1976 intended to extend its projected life.
