Yes, it's definitely possible to do a cheap DIY motion rig, but not with a heavy sprint car frame like you're imagining. Usually the cheapest route is to use a steel "seat mover" style frame, with wiper motors as the actuators. If you're willing to shell out a bit more money, better motors can be had.
