The Cognitive-Theoretic Model of the Universe or CTMU (pronounced "cat-mew") is the first self-simulation theory of the relationship between mind and reality. Its author, Christopher Michael Langan, has been billed as "the smartest man in America", with an IQ reported by 20/20 and other media sources to have been measured at around 195. "CTMU" stands for the Cognitive-Theoretic Model of the Universe. It is a profoundly original theoretical construct which does triple duty as its own universe and model, for which purpose it takes the form of an "intrinsic language" (roughly, a linguistic analogue of intrinsic geometry, which it incorporates as a feature of its universe).

Beginner's introduction. Here is a rudimentary, overall, "big picture" impression of Chris Langan's Cognitive-Theoretic Model of the Universe (CTMU). Matter can be reduced to atoms, atoms can be reduced to subatomic particles, etc, etc. Eventually, if we keep reducing in this manner, we get to the most fundamental constituents of reality

The Cognitive Theoretic Model of the Universe or CTMU addresses the most evident deficiencies and paradoxes associated with conventional discrete and continuum models of reality, including temporal directionality and accelerating cosmic expansion, while preserving virtually all of the major benefits of current scientific and mathematical paradigms. Inasmuch as science is observational or

The theory identifies mental and physical reality, in common with idealism. CTMU is described as a "supertautological reality-theoretic extension of logic"; logic deals in tautologies, and CTMU somehow deals in meta-tautologies. It is based in part on computational language theory (e.g. the work of Chomsky, and type theory).

About 15 years ago, I read Malcolm Gladwell's Outliers. He profiled Chris Langan, an extremely high-IQ person, claiming that he had only mediocre accomplishments despite his high IQ. Chris Langan's theory of everything, the Cognitive Theoretic Model of the Universe, was mentioned. I considered that it might be worth checking out someday.

I invite you to read Christopher Langan's paper: The Cognitive-Theoretic Model of the Universe [www.ctmu.net]. This utterly strange and fascinating paper clearly evidences a scientific animism: a projection of mental processes into the cosmological expanse of the universe! Yes, he believes the universe itself is cognitive, a mind!

This document introduces the Cognitive-Theoretic Model of the Universe (CTMU), a new theory of reality proposed by Christopher Langan. The CTMU views reality as a self-configuring, self-processing language (SCSPL) that evolves through a process called "telic recursion". SCSPL jointly configures its own syntax and state while maximizing a self-selection parameter. The CTMU addresses
