A 'real' BMW with rear-wheel drive, this iteration of 1 Series, for enthusiasts, marks the end of an era. Its successor - the current model - switched to front-wheel drive. BMW's posh alternative to a Volkswagen Golf, the 1 Series clearly hit the mark in the UK, becoming a fairly regular entrant into the top 10 best-sellers list.

The Mk2 BMW 1 Series, or F20 as its often known, isn't your traditional hatchback. Like its predecessor, but not the current model, the F20 1 Series is rear-wheel drive, giving it the long bonnet and stubby tail that makes them so easy to spot in the wild. Its popularity clearly proves that buyers really don't mind how the 1 Series looks

Common Problems & Known Issues Revealed. April 17, 2023. Written By Nick Harris. My love affair with the BMW 1 Series began with a pre-facelift E87 model. While I enjoyed the sleek and sporty design, I quickly realized that the four-cylinder models were prone to issues with the timing chain that could lead to catastrophic engine failure.

I think the F20 is a really nice start for any BMW enthusiast. Or even car enthusiast altogether. Handling is great and still RWD which seperates it from all the other compact cars. When you say 118i F20 are you talking about the Facelift 3-Cylinder B38 or the Pre-Facelift 4-Cylinder N13? I personally own the N13 and had zero issues with it so far.

I bought a F20 (3 Door (F21)) about 6 months ago. 120D. Absolutely love it. It's actually a decent investment, because the 3 door versions are fairly rare to get. I originally tried buying one brand new, however factory was not making any 3 doors for some reason.

No. I would at least get a 118i. The 116i come with an oil cooler, therefore it consumes more oil. Mine consumes around 1L each 2300km's. The 114i, 114i and the 118i come with the same engine (N13). The are pretty robust engines which can produce up to 300HP+. A stage 1 remap will get al the three models up to 210HP.
