Construct the box square, so the back and front fit well. Measure the diagonals carefully and be sure they are identical before the glue cures. When attaching the front head, if the 1/8″ plywood has a slight bow, attach the crown to the front edge (crown facing in), so the upper corners stick out slightly.

If you're going to buy a pedal for a cajon, I highly recommend staying away from the cable ones. The actions just isn't the same as a normal bass drum. There are a few direct drive styles that are a bit clunkier/not as portable but give a much better reaction and won't throw the groove off. But cajon kits sound great and I love playing em.

I've seen lots of these sort of go play in the shop videos and instructions for things like log drums and cajons, it's amazing how people with much more primitive tools had so much more taste. Untuned plywood log drums, plywood cornetto's, let's use shop tools to turn perfectly good materials into dust and garbage, and make fun of some other

1. Cajon. The cajon is the most essential piece of the cajon drum set. It's a wood box drum with a solid frame and a thinner piece of wood on the face. A Cajon-- spanish for box/crate/drawer -- is a box-shaped percussion instrument, originally from Peru. You play it by sitting on it and tapping on the front in different places. If you check google and/or youtube you should find plenty of info and videos. As I said, this was a bit of a whim. I can't play one, and no one has asked me to build one.

Instead of keeping a bit of tension in the fingers, when playing a slap stroke, you want to relax your fingers. After your palm hits the top edge of the drum, your fingers should catapult onto the drum face. You can play with your fingers close together or marginally apart, but they must stay relaxed.

On the coast of Peru, there's a box that's played like a drum called a cajón (that's the Spanish word for big box). Traditionally, it's something you sit on and play with your hands. Playing with a square drum rather than a round shaped drum can be a great way to introduce drumming to children with limited motor abilities, too.

Before attaching the front panel, we cut a few square blocks to glue into the corners, to act as gussets. This will add a little extra glue surface to the corners, hopefully adding to the strength. We want the cajon to be light, but it needs to be strong enough to hold a person as well. I pinned the gussets into place as well, then let

2. Sitting On The Back Of 2/3 Of The Top. You should sit on the back two-thirds of the Cajon and lean a bit forward without slouching. You should not sit too far forward or too far back. If you sit too forward, you won't be able to play easily, as most of the Cajon strikes are focused on the upper parts of the tapa.

In order to play a cajon with sticks, you will need a pair of drumsticks and a cajon. Sit on the cajon so that the front panel is facing you and place your sticks in your lap. Use your dominant hand to hold one stick and your other hand to hold the other stick. Strike the front panel of the cajon with your dominant hand.

Except there's no real substitute for a guitar other than a guitar. I've been asked at venues if I can play a cajon instead of a drumset. I've never seen someone ask a guitarist to play another instrument. Come at it from my perspective, when, you as a drumset player, get asked to play a different instrument all together like it's no big deal.

The best thing to do is see a teacher. Contact your local drum shop and ask if they can recommend someone. Playing a cajon should not hurt. As mentioned above by the cajon busker, a quality cajon can help. But the bottom line is; there is no substitute for good technique. Good luck.

I play them (I make my own, in fact) and several other hand drums. I mostly use my cajon as a seat compared to my other drums, as the bass is usually weaker. I use a sit on Peruvian style (no snare wires or bells) and a lap top snare cajon in a snare basket. I usually also have shakers, hi hats, foot and hand tambourines, a djembe, and a
