Achievements and Trophies have been 'bad for gaming', says developer. One developer argues that including achievements "eat resources" and "diverts attention", but not everyone agrees. Catherine Lewis. There are few better ways to extend the replay value of a game than to throw in a generous list of achievements to complete.

Achievements unlock gear drops in Tf2 and you often get mounts for some of the ones in WoW. The bad: Many games include achivements such as "press forward to move" or complete scripted event the only possible way you can. these are pointless and really only tell you you played the game to point ABC.

I love exploration trophies/achievements. Ditto trophies/achievements that encourage me to try new things or approach a problem from a different perspective. I'm not a fan of difficulty trophies. Perhaps if "difficulty" meant extra layers to the story, more ambiguous or morally grey choices, more convoluted plot twists, O'd probably go

Well but that's not really the fault of achievements. It's always strange how people mix features with simply bad design, if developers are using something wrong that doesn't mean that the feature itself is bad. Achievements, when done right add positive encouragement to the gaming experience and add something for the hardcore players to work for.

He says achievements aren't real because only the person receiving them gets any kind of good feeling from it. He says they're dangerous because your wasting your time for short term validation, putting more effort into a task just for that validation.

By my logic the game with best achievements that i know is Doom, the Roguelike. Achievements range from relatively easy that can be earned before first win and absolutely brutal where you need both skill and some luck. Achievements in mainstream games mostly don't mean shit and i don't bother to get 100%.

Achievement systems in video games have long been a subject of controversy. While some players see them as an integral part of the gaming experience, others view them as an artificial way to extend the game. In addition, players often are not really rewarded for earning those achievements.

Tussell. As far as I know they only became a thing because of PlayStation and Xbox. Steam Achievements actually came about after the introduction of achievements on the Xbox 360 but well before Sony dropped trophies. Valve released The Orange Box in 2007, and that was the first time Steam had achievements.

They definitely could be used interchangeably. I guess the way I think about it is that what I call "achievements" are in-game goals created by the developers. When I refer to "trophies" or the trophy system I separate them because they are created by the platforms like Sony (for their Playstation) or Steam.

I just have difficulty conceptualizing the player who really relishes fighting that same random combat for the 600th time as much as he did the first, or who, having finished the story more than a month ago, is still trying to earn enough XP to have the sheer number of HP necessary to survive that one plot-free boss that was included for this
