One of the more common questions on the Audioholics forums is the matter of which is superior: sealed or ported subwoofers. Unfortunately, there are a lot of popular misconceptions out there: you might hear some folks say that ported subwoofers are no good for music, and are only useful for delivering big sound effects, or conversely that sealed subwoofers are "musical", but lack the depth

A sealed subwoofer, also known as an acoustic suspension subwoofer, is a type of speaker enclosure that is completely airtight. Unlike a ported subwoofer, it does not have a vent or port. The design of a sealed subwoofer is focused on accuracy and precision in bass reproduction rather than maximum output.

Characteristics of a Ported Subwoofer. Ported subwoofers are slightly more complicated than sealed subwoofers to set up, so it's essential to understand their key characteristics. Integration: The size and shape of the room are the most significant factors when integrating a ported subwoofer into your existing setup. The larger the room, the

Myth 1: Sealed Subs are More Musical. This myth comes from how the drivers inside the subwoofers act. More specifically, how the air acts on the drivers. In a ported design, the driver moves in and out and the air moves out and in the port in reaction. There is little air resistance.

The ported sub can give more bass and can fill the medium room quite well with its bass. There is no bound on its driver's movement, and it can move deeper in the cabinet. This will produce more bass. But if you want accurate bass then a sealed sub is better. The sealed sub gives accurate bass without exaggerations.

Ported subwoofers are substantially more prominent. A sealed subwoofer is better equipped to handle the demands if you prefer to crank it to reference playback levels and beyond. They also tend to have a flatter frequency response than ported boxes, which can be advantageous for music listening. They produce a tighter bass with a lower

4. Visual Impact. Among sealed and ported subwoofers with the same size driver, the sealed subwoofer is likely to be more compact and offer a cube-like design that blends more easily into listening rooms with less visual impact and floor space required. The extra cabinet space required by ported subwoofers allows them to play slightly deeper

We discuss IF sealed subwoofers really are more "musical" than ported subs or if it's just a myth needed to be busted. Ported subs tend to be larger and have

Sealed subwoofers are generally more power-efficient than ported subwoofers, especially when reproducing low frequencies. The sealed enclosure design acts as a shock absorber for sound waves, requiring less power from the amplifier to achieve the desired volume levels.

Ultra Deep Extension - A Natural Complement to Room Gain. A sealed subwoofer naturally has a shallower roll-off slope than a ported subwoofer.SVS takes this concept one step further by employing sophisticated DSP equalization to tailor the overall shape of the frequency response and roll-off slope, in order to take maximum advantage of available 'room gain' so common in small to mid-size

At really low tactile frequencies, a sealed sub can actually have more energy than a comparable ported subwoofer. Sealed subs respond quickly to changes in direction because every time the woofer moves out the sealed cabinet wants to pull it back in and when its pushed in the springiness of the air wants to push it back to its starting place.

Generally, the ported subwoofer enclosure is larger than the sealed enclosure. In this way, deep tuning frequency is better achieved. Also, ported displays have more bass and lower port noise even at higher drive. If you crave that room trembling audio system, ported boxes are for you. A sealed subwoofer has a smaller size.

A ported subwoofer can move a lot of air and fill up a very large room. Because you need the space inside the box for air, ported subwoofers tend to be larger tit for tat with a sealed subwoofer. This is something to keep in mind when deciding where and how you will be placing the subs in the room.

Ported sub has higher output as you approach the port tuning frequency then falls off rapidly, so it will hit harder in a frequency range determined mostly by the size of the enclosure. Sealed sub has a more gradual rolloff but has lower output, and usually lower group delay so it sounds faster.

Ported subwoofers can reach lower on the frequency spectrum and render the most demanding low frequency content with more vigor at higher volumes, but these are not the only consideration. A ported subwoofer can also be incredibly musical, just like a sealed subwoofer, while providing palpable, chest-thumping bass for home theater.

Sealed subwoofers consist of a driver, an enclosure, and an amplifier; the driver is what's responsible for 100% of the system's output. The cone inside of a sealed subwoofer takes more power to produce the same volume as it would in a comparable ported box. A sealed sub rarely roars, thunders, or booms. That's because a sealed sub has a

This vent connects the sound from the backside of the cone to the sound from the front of the sub, resulting in a stronger, more room-filling, and more vibey bass. Sealed Subwoofers. Sealed subs are simply subwoofer speakers enclosed om airtight boxes, which produce more articulate bass. Instead of echoing bass sustainment, you'll hear a flat

But with the modern day subwoofers, the gap is closing. For example, consider the Rythmik Ported subs. If we set the Damping to high, the sub sounds like a sealed sub and its lowend rolloff also becomes shallow like a sealed sub. Size is the primary benifit of the sealed sub besides being if musical.

Here is a list of typical bits of misinformation: 1) Porting a speaker increases efficiency by allowing the back-wave generated by the driver to reinforce the front-wave. 2) Ported speakers have higher distortion than sealed enclosure speakers. 3) Ported speakers are more dynamic than sealed enclosure speakers.

Ported can be just as musical, they just cost more, the PB2000 is a good sub for music. Of course a $200 porter sub isn't super musical, but the cheapest good sealed subs are also >$400, so that's a super unfair comparison. Ported subs can be very good.

Perhaps at the high end for subs, but lower end ported subs definitely exhibit some of the shortcomings, like group delay (can manifest as drums/bass notes not being sync'd with the rest of the music) and chuffing. I have a HSU ported (STF-1), Energy ported (EXLS8) and a HSU sealed sub (ULS-15) and notice the delay for the ported ones, although

For the music I will be listening to, it seems a sealed sub will give a more accurate response, and detail is definitely my priority, but my room is fairly large for a single sealed sub. I am curious if people would suggest going for a ported sub (probably the SVS PB-1000 Pro) or starting with the sealed SB-1000 Pro and then adding a second

Ported subs will give you more output than a similar sized sealed sub because a sealed sub has to increase the amp power quite a bit to match the output of a ported sub. A lot of people say a sealed sub is better for music while a ported sub is better for movies but if you get a high quality sub and not some Sony/Samsung HTiB crap, a ported sub
