Stanley then gives an example for why expository preaching is over-rated and it's the icing, and not the cake, that makes the difference… I believe the true defining moment of my life as a communicator took place when I was in seminary. I was asked to do a chapel for the high school academy at First Baptist Church, Dallas.

Here, then, are three nagging problems I still have with Stanley's use of the Bible: 1. Affirming the Bible's inerrancy is not the same as trusting its sufficiency. I can't speak for other critics, of course, but I for one never doubted that on paper Stanley would affirm inerrancy.

Draw them into a relationship. Show that the Bible is helpful. That's Stanley's preaching in a nutshell. It differs from other seeker-sensitive methods in one significant way: Stanley's approach is expository. Although he doesn't preach book-long series, most of his sermons are expositions of a specific text, introduced with an

There has been a great deal of debate about whether Andy Stanley is an expository preacher. He is a graduate of Dallas Theological Seminary, a school known for its strong commitment to Bible exposition, but in interviews, he has spoken disparagingly of verse-by-verse preaching (he is not a fan of preaching with points either).

A Review of Andy Stanley's "Irresistible". Andy Stanley was a few years behind me at Dallas Theological Seminary. I recall grading some of his papers. I've long had a high regard for him. As I read his recent book called Irresistible1, I became concerned about the direction his ministry appears to be taking.

Good preaching is that which exposits a text (or texts) AND makes a robust and relevant application. That's hard, and there is no cheating possible. I would say that it can be easy to be faithful in both of those areas: application and exposition, but miss the gospel. That is often the hardest part, depending on the text.

In 2009, Ed Stetzer of LifeWay interviewed Andy Stanley. Andy Stanley is, of course, the son of Charles Stanley. He's also the pastor of a megachurch, a church known for it's hipster, seeker-sensitive style. And Stanley had just written a book on preaching. That interview is obviously now more than five years old, and so in that sense it's dated.
