If you played D&D Frostgrave will be a natural fit. Yes- getting the wizard box and two soldier boxes from North Star will work well if you and your friend share the boxes. I'd also grab two to four wolf/dog minis to represent the dog option. You can also use any minis you'd like if you find something cool.

Here are a few tips that I've found make the game easier to learn, especially if they are not wargamers. As with all recommendations, your mileage may vary. I'm just not certain your background. - Start small. 1 wizard and 4 mercenaries. Have the wizard phase include 2 goons and the second phase is the other two.

Minis: the nice thing about Frostgrave is that you can use pretty much any mini you like. You can even just use paper minis that you print and put on suitable 1 inch tabs. That being said: I like the official Frostgrave minis, they cost around 1€ per mini for the big boxes with like 20 soldiers.

Larger and smaller miniatures are available and it is perfectly acceptable to use those instead (as long as your opponent does as well!), but you might want to adjust the game's measurements accordingly. Definitely start with the core book. You'll get a lot of mileage out of just the core book. There are other spells and a few other tweaks in the other books (I like the the changes to potion making in the FrostGrave Folio a lot. It's a definite improvement.) Forgotten Pacts expands on the summoning rules from the core books and tweaks it a bit

I have a lot of unpainted Repaer Bones miniatures from too many kickstarters and I decided I really need to start doing something with them. Initially I might use my Dungeon terrain (Ainsty tiles) to play a couple of games but I have also started 3d printing the Ulvheim files from Thingiverse to create a Frostgrave table. First prints:

One speedbump to getting into Frostgrave is that it sort of requires a good amount of terrain. I would highly consider making your own or looking into papercraft (mounted on foam board) terrain. The boxed sets for warbands aren't a bad buy, especially if you are working on fielding 2 groups.

Choosing your Wizard. The most important figure in the entire game of Frostgrave is your Wizard. The wizard is the main figure head of your warband and sets the cadence and theme of gameplay for your party. Before you can start playing Frostgrave you must 1) name your wizard and 2) select the school of magic that best represents you.

You can have perfectly good games by playing on a city map drawn on a sheet of paper with printed cardboard cut-outs for miniatures. If you do want miniatures, 1 box of Frostgrave soldiers (20 figures) plus a wizard box (8 figures) will give you enough models for two players to make a Warband. If you want the full menagerie of wandering

Both benefit from lots of terrain. Both are lighter and more fun versus super deep and longer games. Frostgrave has some nice campaign mechanics and tons of published scenarios. RelicBlade uses a very easy to learn system and plays super-fast and is quicker to put a band together and get going each session. 3.

After that prime it, paint it, and mark the popsicle stick with a letter. Name each of your warband units so each lettered piece corresponds with the first letter of their names. Once you've played a few games and can figure out what you want the composition of your army to be, you can buy the appropriate miniatures.
