A multimeter can read AC voltage and can be used to test for ripple. The alternator should be replaced if AC voltage of more than 50mV is detected (in some cars as much as 100mV is acceptable). A dead or weak battery can throw off a ripple test, however, so you must make sure the battery is fully charged.

A ripple test showed that the alternator should be replaced. The new alternator had a ripple test reading of 55mV, which was acceptable. The replacement alternator put out 13.9V without a load, and 13.6V loaded. All of the previous alternator tests showed around 12V loaded or not loaded. Therefore, the vehicle was running too close to drain the

How to perform the test. View connection guidance notes. Connect PicoScope Channel A to the alternator B+ terminal. Minimize the help page. You will see that PicoScope has displayed an example waveform and is preset to capture your waveform. Start the engine and allow it to idle. Start the scope to see live data.

The alternator produces an AC current that must be converted into DC current by way of a rectifier. Diodes inside the rectifier pass the negative AC current to ground. This process still leaves a very small amount of AC current in the system. DC current will drop if a diode inside the rectifier fails, and this may cause excessive ripple voltage

For some alternators, it's normal to see as low as 13 volts. For some, a constant 13.6 volts is an indication of a problem. For others, it's normal to see as high as 16 volts for long stretches. Still, it's perfectly normal for others to see the alternator not charge at all intermittently. This wide discrepancy in voltages is due to the

I am trouble shooting for Trans. Failsafe Prog. Alternator ripple testing from autozone read 56mV and technician told me it was too high. Does anyone for sure knowing what is acceptable range? May be someone with watercool alternator can go to the autozone to establish a baseline and share the result here. Thanks.
