Like others have already mentioned, these images are halftoned in Photoshop. It's similar to the art technique called stippling. If you zoom in you can see the little dots that make up the "grey" areas of the image. Same process (but with cyan, magenta and yellow dots) used for printed magazines.

Process printing is the way you want to go. Your desing could have 50 colors in it and it can be achieved using just 4 colors (CMYK). I'm sure you have seen many different printed shirts with photo/realistic prints on them. That's all process work. And while DTG has come a long way, I am not really a fan.

I've heard Screen Printing is better than DTG and I need to print a meme on a T-shirt to send to a friend as a joke, but I need the picture to come through as clear as possible.
