Last, but not least, ZF also made a big fuss by saying that this 9-speed transmission is up to 16% more fuel efficient compared to the outgoing 6-speed unit. 16% might be a bit of a stretch, but the 9-speed is indeed more efficient compared to all older ZF automatic transmissions. The 9HP transmission has nine forward gears and a spread of 9.81. To illustrate: At 1000 rpm the vehicle 'crawls' at around 7 km /h in first gear or it rolls over the motorway at 120 km /h with casual 2000 tours in ninth gear. Achim Hartmann. The total spread is 9.81 which significantly reduces the engine speed and thus also fuel consumption. The transmission has a harmonic step range like ZF's 8-speed automatic transmission (8HP) - the wheelset efficiencies of the planetary gearset rise above 97% in all gears. This is because the ZF 9HP was introduced in the TLX before it started appearing in other acura/honda models. It's still being used in MDX, Ridgeline, & Pilot. Sure they will get the 10 speed soon. Point is that honda used this AT for a while. There are still lot of mystery to the 9 speed, some like em, most hate em, etc etc.

My van's transmission was replaced at 54,000 miles in June 2020 after several attempts at resetting software. I wasn't stranded because of it, I just had the transmission adaptations reset about every 10,000 miles when it started having the 15 mph jolt again. It's all down to the clutches. While a traditional automatic uses friction clutches in the form of either band clutches or multi-plate friction clutches, the 9HP blends friction clutches and dog clutches in the same transmission case. Dog clutches are "interference" clutches more commonly found in manual transmissions and transfer cases.
